EU AI Act Compliance
FAQ & legal
Common questions, the legal framework and a clean uninstall.
Answers to the questions we get most often – plus how to remove the extension cleanly and what the legal background actually says.
No legal advice: neither this extension nor this documentation replaces legal advice. How you have to implement the transparency obligations in your specific shop is something to clarify with your legal counsel.
The legal background
Article 50 of the European AI Regulation (EU AI Act, Regulation (EU) 2024/1689) requires that artificially generated or substantially manipulated content is recognisable to people, and that people are told when AI is in play – with a chatbot, for example. Those obligations have applied since 2 August 2026, and the European Commission adopted its final guidelines on Article 50 on 20 July 2026. There is also a voluntary Code of Practice on Transparency of AI-Generated Content.
As a shop operator you are a deployer: the disclosure of AI-generated or substantially AI-manipulated images showing realistic-looking persons, places or events has to be there at the latest on first exposure (Art. 50(4) and (5)), and an AI chatbot needs its own notice (Art. 50(1)). Machine-readable marking of the outputs themselves (Art. 50(2)) stays with the respective AI provider.
Article 99(4) provides for fines of up to EUR 15 million or 3% of worldwide annual turnover. On top of that, in Germany there is a real risk of competition-law warnings.
The extension is a tool for implementing that transparency in practice – by labelling your content and by showing the notices in your shop.
Common questions
Does the extension detect AI content automatically?
Not reliably, and deliberately not by guessing. On upload it reads technical image metadata (C2PA/IPTC, as written by DALL·E, Adobe Firefly and others) and suggests a status from it. We consciously avoid heuristic "AI detectors" – misclassifications would be a liability risk. The suggestions are a helper; the decision, and the responsibility for correct labelling, stays with you.
Are my image files modified?
No. Only metadata is read. Your files and any embedded C2PA/IPTC information stay untouched.
Do I have to label every image one by one?
No. With a lot of media there are much faster routes: CSV import, bulk marking per media folder and automatic folder defaults for new uploads. See Bulk labelling.
Which statuses trigger a badge?
By default "AI-generated" and "AI-manipulated (substantial)". You can change that in the configuration – for example to give "Standard editing only" a badge as well.
Can I change how the badge looks?
Completely: position, style (icon/text/both), colours, size, text, tooltip and your own icon. Every setting is in the configuration and applies per sales channel.
Does labelling work the same across all my shops?
Not necessarily. Nearly every setting can be made separately per sales channel, so your German and your international shop can look different.
Can I label video and product texts too?
Yes. Alongside images the extension covers native video media, video CMS elements (YouTube/Vimeo), audio, and a configurable storefront notice for AI-generated product text. A product-wide disclosure on the product page summarises which content types are AI-labelled.
Do I have to label my chatbot?
If your chatbot answers using artificial intelligence, a notice is required. The extension shows it before the first interaction. It works with any widget that can be addressed via a CSS selector – including asynchronously loading ones. See What customers see.
Does the extension process personal data of my customers?
Not in the storefront. Badge, product-wide disclosure and text notice are purely informational, load no external services and set no cookies. In the administration the extension logs which admin user changed a label and when – solely for your internal traceability.
How do I prove that I labelled things?
Through the coverage dashboard, the change log and the compliance dossier as PDF. See AI register & evidence.
Do I get warned if I forget to label something?
Optionally, yes. You can switch on a warning when too many media are unlabelled, and a warning when you activate a product containing unlabelled AI-capable images. See Configuration.
Uninstalling
If you no longer need the extension, you can remove it cleanly. During uninstallation you choose whether your labels are kept or removed entirely.
Step 1: Open Extensions → My extensions.
Step 2: Find EU AI Act Compliance.
Step 3: Choose Uninstall on the extension.
Step 4: In the dialog, decide whether your data should be kept.
Keep data
Pick this if you're only removing the extension temporarily or plan to use it again later. Your AI labels, settings and the AI register stay stored. Install the extension again and everything is back.
Remove everything
Pick this if you want the extension gone for good. All of its data is removed cleanly:
- every AI label on images, video and audio,
- the origin values on product texts,
- the AI register and the change log,
- all extension settings.
Your shop is then back in the state it was in before installation. Your actual media and products are of course untouched – only the AI labels go.
Before removing everything, generate a compliance dossier and export the AI register if you want to keep the documentation for your records. See AI register & evidence.
What happens to the notices in the shop?
After uninstalling, no badges, product-wide disclosures or chatbot notices are shown any more. Shopping Experiences that use the "AI Transparency Info" element keep working – the explanatory block simply isn't rendered there any more.
In short: what's on you
- You classify and label your own content correctly.
- The extension shows the notices in the shop automatically and supports you with maintenance and evidence.
- For the legal assessment of your specific case, please involve legal counsel.
